In Japan, bug-catching is a common hobby dating back to the 1960s, often starting from a young age. Beetles are a favourite to catch as there are many types with distinct characteristics that come out in the summer.
My cousin and I loved doing this; we would lather honey on a tree the night before, and wake up at 4am to find swarms of bugs! We would pick the biggest beetle before other children in the neighbourhood got there, and take it home in a box to admire closely before releasing it.
Although Leon hasn't experienced bug-catching himself, he's watched many videos and documentaries about beetles, and recognises each specific type! The Rhinoceros beetle is one of his favourites for its unique and bulky build.
